Steinbeck’s portrayal of human struggle points towards fundamental redemption as a potentiality inherent in every life.

The book is fun; it’s engrossing, it’s harsh.

There is value in this type of novel. Pockets of nebulosity may have lingered in Steinbeck’s representation but by reflecting culture in such an unforgiving way Steinbeck provided a vehicle for transcendance of all kinds of things from outmoded mannerisms(!) to outmoded grooves in thought - visible for the first time.
