Thank you for posting this. This book is an amazing look at the manipulation of culture by the educational system by Ivan Illich, one of my heroes and a man who was a scientist, spoke over 16 languages fluently and read in over 20, was a Catholic priest, headed the Catholic church's Third World development program, taught in San Juan, Puerto Rico; left the Church over a number of issues, including its “development” policies; spent many years with access to the Vatican's library, started the amazing “Center for Intercultural Documentation” in Cuernavaca, Mexico and I recommend ALL of his books.
And the best one to start with is Tools for Conviviality which is a surprising look at natural human brilliance and how humans organize themselves without coercive, regulatory institutions.
As for the issue of deschooling, interested parties may also want to read Dumbing Us Down by John Taylor Gatto who one the National Educator of the Year award several years in a row as well as Instead of Education by John Holt, both brilliant.
Further insight can be gained with Ivan Illich and Barry Sanders' ABC: The Alphabetization of the Popular Mind which is a classic on cultural conquest and, specifically, the Spanish Conquest of SPAIN, yes! SPAIN! under Ferdinand and Isabela. While Columbus was on his way to murder indigenous people for the Castilians, the Castilians were murdering and annihilating 100's of indigenous cultures in Spain.
Please recall that, even today, there are 5 official languages spoken in Spain: Castillian, Catalán, Galician, Valencian and Basque.
